Luck & Opportunities

Do you like to watch the stars? We do—especially shooting stars!

On our most recent trip to the islands, we got up extra early on our first morning there (thanks to a little help from the time change!) and walked out onto our balcony.

We could hardly believe our eyes...

The dark sky was lit up like a sparkling carpet with thousands of glittering stars.

As we let our eyes adjust, more began to appear, and suddenly we were seeing shooting stars left and right.

So many that we lost count!

We were captivated by this stunning display in the sky. Our heads turned to watch another shooting star that suddenly flashed electric green at the end and then, just seconds later...

the best shooting star we'd ever seen!!!

A comet soared across the sky leaving a glowing trail that slowly faded. What a morning delight.

This was just too good!

Turns out, after a little googling, we had unknowingly timed our morning stargazing with the peak of a meteor shower!

This got us thinking...shooting stars are a lot like opportunities, and in order to see them, we have to do three things:

1. Place yourself in the right environment

Hawaii is one of the best places to view the stars because there is so little light pollution compared to more metropolitan areas. The shooting stars are there, but if you're not in the right place, it's hard to see them. The same goes for opportunities. If you want to experience more opportunities this year, you need to put yourself in proximity to the people who can make the connections and open the doors that you desire.

2. Time it right

You could be in the right place, but if it's at the wrong time, you're still going to come up short. If we tried to stargaze at noon, being in Hawaii doesn't help our cause. Timing matters.

3. Position yourself accordingly

Once you're in the right place at the right time, you need to adopt the posture necessary to be able to see and seize the opportunities that may come your way. Don't just let things pass you by. Take initiative to introduce yourself, ask for help, offer your services, be generous, and make a friend. That morning in Hawaii, we were in the right place at the right time, but if we stayed sleeping in our beds, we would have missed it. It wasn't until we positioned ourselves to look up at the sky, that we were able to see the shooting stars.

People might tell you that opportunities are purely based on luck, but just like the shooting stars, if you do those three things, you can automatically increase your chances of being able to see and seize more opportunities.

So, what are you hoping to accomplish this year? What opportunities are you looking for?

How can you apply these three concepts of environment, timing, and positioning to increase your chances of success?
